Revisiting Karl Malden

250px-Karl_malden_on_the_waterfront_2

One of Hollywood's legends passed away a week ago on July 1st.  Karl Malden, a mainstay of the silver screen passed away at the venerable age of 97.  A Gary, Indiana native, Karl Malden is perhaps best known for his Academy Award winning role in A Streetcar Named Desire.  Read his obituary in the Los Angeles Times to find out more about his long life.

As a way to stay cool and save some bucks, check out one of Malden's flicks from the library today.

Children's Programming Going on Summer Break

Children Reading Books

After a summer hard at work reading, the Children's Department is taking some time off.  Due to the lack of programming space (because of necessary construction work), the department has decided to cancel all programming from July 10th through August 31st.  This means that Read to Me, Mother Goose Time, and Toddler Time are cancelled until September.  Please refer to our calendar for September dates and times.

Please note that the End of Summer Reading Party on July 10th will still be occuring, so make sure to bring all of your little readers!

Please contact the children's department at 528-4225 with further questions.

New Ways to Serve You

450px-Blue_question_mark_svg

The Reference Department will be implementing a plan to serve our patrons in a more proactive manner.  This means that you can look for more direct service on the library floor.  As always, we will have a staff member at the Reference Desk but we will also have staff members at other points of service in the library.  Look for us on the floor helping to guide you in selecting and locating materials.  We are here to help you understand how the library works, how to search for books using our Online Public Access Catalog, and how to use our databases. And remember, when you share your desires and needs with us, we can better direct you to avenues of which you might not be aware and stock our shelves with items you like.  Please look for us on the library's floor.  We will also be looking for you!

Feel free to download this map indicating where our new points of service can be found.  Download TBMLMap3

Keeping Safe Online

Visualization of a Portion of the Routes on the Internet

Visualization of a Portion of the Routes on the Internet (via Wikipedia.org)

The web is constantly changing and evolving and it can be hard to stay on top of all these new developments.  Along with the evolution of the web comes the evolution of the cyber-criminal, complete with new tricks, tools, and scams.  So do yourself a favor and peruse a few sites or pass them on to your loved ones to keep them safe and sound online.  No matter your age or experience level, here are some sites to help you safely navigate through this tangled web:

The Center for Missing and Exploited Children and The Boys and Girls Club have teamed up to bring you the NetSmartz Workshop.  Geared toward parents, guardians, and people who work with kids, this site is a comprehensive and up-to-date look at the latest online trends among teens and the habits of children.  Definitely worth a look for anyone caring for a child or teen.

OnGuard Online is a site that "provides practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to help you be on guard against Internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information."  Bookmarking this site and revisiting it will help you be a more confident consumer and user of internet services without opening yourself up to scams.  Features games, videos, tools, and other learning opportunities.

Locally, the New Mexico Office of the Attorney General has an Internet safety site that is worth a look.  For a more comprehensive and up-to-date set of information, the Washington State Office of the Attorney General has an excellent site geared toward the average adult Internet user.  Both are worth a look.

And finally, AARP has an excellent and well-known site on Internet Safety targeting the over-65 crowd.  Specifically geared toward the issues, concerns, and use patterns of this age group, Online Safety has videos and articles covering everything from setting up a firewall to protecting oneself from identity theft.  Highly recommended.

Gorgeous New Art Books

Asianamericanart

In support of the Las Cruces Art Museum's "Las Cruces Collects" exhibit, we offer a selection of new art books:

Asian American Art: A History, 1850-1970     A comprehensive and beautiful collection of works from around the country.  May be the new authoritative collection for this ethnic group of artists.

Post-Modern Art: 1945-Now     A strong collection of what is happening NOW and more recent predecessors.

Loot: The Battle Over The Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World    A fascinating look at the pathways pieces of art can be taken on and the controversies and battles that erupt over these routes.

The Street Art Book: 60 Artists in Their Own Words     This book offers up little-heard commentary on street art and the cultures and contexts surrounding this movement.

Street Art: The Graffiti Revolution     A more comprehensive look at this newer artistic movement.

Photography: New Mexico     A survey of artists based in New Mexico.  Some of the photography is specific to the landscape while other artists deal in more esoteric concepts.

Annie Liebovitz at Work     The famed photographer provides commentary and context for some of her more famous pieces of work.

Pictures From a Drawer: Prison and the Art of Portraiture     A fascinating series of photographs from a prison in Arkansas in the 1930's.
