Is there a special mother in your life who likes to play Scrabble®? Maybe she’s your mom, or grandmother, or domestic partner, or aunt, or sister, or any other important-to-you female who just happens to be a mother also. If so, then, here’s a great suggestion: On Mother’s Day (this Sunday, May 10th,) take her out to play the world’s most ubiquitous and popular word game!
You can do so at Second Sunday Scrabble®. On the second Sunday of each month, Literacy Volunteers—Doña Ana County (LVDAC) hosts this fundraiser at 2:00 pm in the Hardback Café in Hastings Books, Music, and Videos 2350 E. Lohman Ave here in Las Cruces.
The fee to play is $3.00 per person and it all goes to LVDAC who use the money to provide free textbooks and supplies (notebooks, pencils, paper, pens, etc.) for their adult literacy students. You get to play at least one game of Scrabble® but it usually ends up being more than one. I have played four or five in one afternoon!
The competitiveness and skill level of the folk who come varies widely. We have some people who are OK players and very laid back about the rules of the game. Many even use the Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary—4th edition to look up words while playing. At the other end of our spectrum are some who are quite skilled and fiercely competitive. You can pretty much pick the level of game you want to play.
So, we invite you to come and play. Depending on how magnanimous you feel, you might even let your special mother of the day, be she your own dear mom or another mother, beat you! Then you could feel doubly virtuous, first for helping to teach adults to read; second, for being such a nice person and bringing some pleasure into a very special lady’s life. Lest you get too swell-headed and puffed up with yourself, there will most likely be an opponent there able and happy to administer a blistering shellacking to you, thus leaving your newly inflated pride in shambles and restoring karmic balance!
