TBML is now a donation site for the Pet Food Bank

 

A local animal-welfare advocacy group, ACTion Programs for Animals has started a Pet Food Bank for Las Cruces' needy pets.  The sites currently accepting donations include: The Bean of Mesilla, Better Life Pet Foods, Horse N' Hound Feed N' Supply, Mountain View Market, Toucan's Market, Calista Animal Hospital, and Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.  Just look for the brightly-colored donation bins and make your donation today!

Book Review: Revolution on the Range

Joseph Courtney White's new book, Revolution on the Range: The Rise of a New Ranch in the American West, occupies an interesting space in the debate over open spaces.  White, a land restoration activist and founder of the Quivira Coalition, argues that neither environmentalist nor traditional ranchers have the answer when it comes to protecting and restoring open land.  Instead, White chooses to investigate the ways that the two traditionally contentious groups can coexist and actually work toward the same goals. 

Revolution on the Range offers a number of different theories and practical ways in which ranchers and evironmentalists can work to restore the ravaged Western lands and protect those open spaces from their common enemy--sprawl.

Revolution on the Range is a fascinating read that should hopefully stir up dialog between disparate groups interested in preserving open spaces in the New Mexico.  It should be a place to begin talking about and investigating other ways of looking at common problems.  BES

Birding Adventurer

“It’s an immature redwing!” “No, it’s a female tri-colored!” “Well, pull out your Peterson’s and let’s settle this!”

Last week (August 28th), we celebrated the anniversary of the birthday of naturalist Roger Tory Peterson, author and illustrator of A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern North America (first published in 1934) and developer of “the Peterson System” for bird identification. Peterson was born at Jamestown NY in 1908 and died in Old Lyme CT on July 28 1996. He is credited with almost single-handedly popularizing the hobby of “birding” or “bird watching” for generations of Americans. His magnum opus went through several editions and eventually was joined by a companion volume for the western part of the continent. Today, these field guides have gone through numerous editions and revisions and are still among the most highly regarded by amateur ornithologists in the field. On this centenary of his birth, RTP is fondly remembered and acknowledged by all of us as the man who, more than any other got it all started.
